Located on a sprawling 6-acre campus in Mahim, Mumbai, David Sassoon Industrial School (DSIS) serves as a safe haven for boys aged 12 to 18 who are admitted by the Child Welfare Committee and are in need of care and protection under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. These children are often rescued from neglect, child labour, trafficking, domestic violence, leaving home unannounced or other vulnerable situations. The institution offers a nurturing environment with shelter, formal education, vocational training, and emotional support to help them rebuild their lives. The well-equipped campus includes dormitories, classrooms, workshops, a dispensary, mental health services, a kitchen, and a large playground, providing holistic care and development opportunities for every child.
DSIS supports two vital functions:
-
Reception Unit: For boys rescued from neglect, child labour, trafficking, domestic violence, leaving home unannounced or other vulnerable situations. A team of dedicated probation officers work tirelessly to trace families, assess home situations, and initiate rehabilitation or safe reintegration processes.
-
Long-Term Care: For boys who have lost one or both parents, have been orphaned, or come from families facing acute poverty or crisis. These children find not only shelter and education but emotional safety, structure, and a second chance at childhood.
